Abstract

This article reassesses Judith Butler’s reading of Michel Foucault from the standpoint of the ontology of subjectivation. A dominant interpretation in the literature holds that Butler, particularly in her 1997 book, The Psychic Life of Power, completes the Foucauldian framework by extending it in a psychoanalytic direction. Yet Butler’s other book published in the same year, Excitable Speech, brings into view a different moment in her thought: the explanatory ground of subjectivation shifts from Foucault’s practice-based and depth-critical understanding of the subject toward a psychic-linguistic ontology structured by the conjunction of psychic attachment and linguistic vulnerability. By tracing Butler’s trajectory from her early Foucauldian convergence to the break that becomes explicit in 1997, this article argues that Butler’s intervention should be understood not as an explanatory expansion, but as an ontological reconfiguration. In doing so, it further contends that Foucault’s distance from psychoanalysis reflects not a theoretical deficiency, but an ontological commitment tied to what he formulates as an “ontology of ourselves.”
