Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common degenerative joint diseases in horses, characterized by the progressive breakdown of cartilage, and represents a leading cause of lameness and loss of performance. In this review, the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic approaches for equine OA are discussed in light of the current literature. Conventional treatment strategies, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, and viscosupplementation, are effective in alleviating symptoms but remain limited in halting disease progression. In recent years, regenerative therapies have gained prominence. Among these, polysulfated glycosaminoglycans, mesenchymal stem cell therapies, gene therapies, and mitochondrial injections are highlighted as biological approaches with the potential to alter the course of OA. This review compares the advantages and disadvantages of current therapeutic modalities and provides perspectives on the present and future management of OA in horses.
