Abstract

Six hundred of urine samples sent to Van Training and Research Hospital Central Laboratory from adult inpatients and outpatiens in 2010, were found to have microorganisms in significant numbers. The most frequently isolated microorga nisms were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. and Proteus spp. A total of 375 E.coli strains were isolated and 29.9 % of them were found to be ESBL positive. Amikacin, imipenem and meropenem were found to be effective against all E.coli isolates, fosfomycin was found to be effective for 85 % of ESBL positive and 95 % for ESBL negative isolates. Nitrofurantoine was found to be effective aganist 82 % of ESBL positive isolates and 90 % of ESBL negative isolates. The susceptibility of E.coli strains to antibacterials were found significantly lower in GSBL positive strains when compared with negative ones except amikacin, imipenem and meropenem.
