Abstract

The study aims to reveal the effect of institution type on violence against healthcare workers and to identify the mediating role of job stress in this effect. A cross-sectional design was adopted in the study, and data were obtained from a total of 330 healthcare workers employed at a public and a private hospital operating in Istanbul using a face-to-face survey method. The hypothesized model was tested using SPSS and AMOS software programs. According to the analysis results, work stress was found to play a mediating role in the effect of institution type on violence against healthcare workers (95% CI = -0.103, -0.019). Accordingly, the type of institution negatively affects employees’ work stress (p<0.005, β=-0.154), which in turn increases exposure to violence (p<0.001, β=0.416). When these findings are evaluated, it is understood that healthcare personnel working in public hospitals experience work stress due to a higher patient load compared to private hospitals, relatively unclear organizational boundaries, and perceived weakness of organizational sanctions, and that these conditions significantly increase the likelihood of violence. In this context, institutional enforcement mechanisms should be implemented in public hospitals to reduce stress and violence, and the organizational support perceived by employees should be strengthened. Furthermore, it is essential that policymakers conduct studies within the referral chain to regulate the flow of patient referrals.
