Abstract

The aim of this study is to classify the major soil groups (MSG) of the provinces of Kayseri, Kırşehir, Nevşehir, and Niğde, located in the Central Anatolia Region, within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment and to determine their spatial distribution. In this context, 1/25.000-scale digital soil maps were classified in layers using ArcGIS software, and major soil group maps were created for each province. According to the research results, the most common major soil groups in the region were identified as non-calcareous brown soils (U), brown forest soils (M), and chestnut brown soils (CE). In terms of soil diversity, Niğde Province exhibits the richest structure with 15 different major soil groups, while Kayseri Province has 11, and Kırşehir and Nevşehir Provinces show relatively less diversity. The findings provide important baseline data for assessing the region’s agricultural potential and for land-use planning.
