Abstract
Rapid digitalization and product diversification in financial markets necessitate the updating of finance education content in parallel with these dynamics. It is of critical importance for the professional competence of future finance professionals that university students correctly understand derivatives markets, which are distinguished by their complex structures and risk management functions. The aim of this study is to multidimensionally analyze the knowledge levels, awareness, and educational requirements of Afyon Kocatepe University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (FEAS) students regarding derivatives markets and products. Within the scope of the research, data were collected from 390 valid observations using the face-to-face survey method, and the obtained data were examined using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and cross-tabulation analyses. The analysis results demonstrated that the scale possesses a high level of reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha: 0.931) and that students' perceptions are clustered under five fundamental dimensions: “Technical Knowledge Level,” “Educational Requirement,” “Market Experience,” “Economic Impact Awareness,” and “Risk Perception.” According to the research findings, although 59.3% of the students have a tendency to invest, their technical knowledge levels exhibit significant differences based on their departments. Specifically, it was determined that the awareness and knowledge levels regarding derivatives markets of students in the International Trade and Finance and Business Administration departments were higher compared to students in the Economics, Public Finance, and Political Science departments. Furthermore, it was determined that the vast majority of students believe in the future importance of derivatives markets and demand that these topics be given more extensive coverage in the curriculum (Educational Requirement factor). Consequently, the study indicates that enriching university curricula with simulation and application-oriented content, rather than solely theoretical knowledge, is a significant necessity for enhancing financial literacy.
