Abstract

The paper uplights the unexpected interaction between Psephellus bornmuelleri (Asteraceae, Cardueae), a species endemic to the Central Anatolian steppes, and Larinus obtusus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). During field observations, it was determined that L. obtusus larvae feed on P. bornmuelleri capitulae, consuming seeds, which could affect the plant's reproductive success. Morphological examination of the adult insects revealed adaptations for feeding and oviposition within P. bornmuelleri capitulates. Larval development occurs within the capitulum over three instars, and pupation is completed within the same structure. Seed predation per capitulum in our observations ranged from 35-60%, indicating a significant impact on seed production. While Larinus obtusus is known as a biological control agent against invasive knapweed species, our findings suggest that it may pose a potential ecological risk to endemic plants with limited distribution. Since these results have highlight impact for monitoring of Psephellus bornmuelleri populations, we think that it is necessary to prevent contact of biological control agents with endemic species.
