Abstract
This study aims to examine nomadic pastoralism not merely as a historical way of life, but as a long-term social structure shaped by geography, climate, and economic conditions. In this context, Fernand Braudel’s concept of longue durée is adopted as the theoretical framework, and nomadic pastoralism is evaluated within its continuity from Central Asia to Anatolia. Elements such as the yaylak–kışlak (summer–winter pasture) system, seasonal mobility, tent culture, the symbolic significance of the horse, and a sky-centered belief system are analyzed as fundamental components of this long-term structure. The study analyzes the literary representations of nomadic culture in Yaşar Kemal’s novels, particularly those set in the Çukurova region. In these works, nomadic pastoralism is not presented merely as a way of life belonging to the past; rather, the transformations brought about by modernization, the disruptions caused by settlement policies, and the resulting cultural degeneration occupy a central place. In various novels, especially The Legend of the Thousand Bulls, the traces of nomadic pastoralism are explored through the dissolution of the yaylak–kışlak (summer-winter pasture) system, as well as through elements such as the tent, the horse, and sky-centered belief practices. In conclusion, nomadic pastoralism represents an example of longue durée that has persisted for centuries, and Yaşar Kemal’s novels render both the continuity of this long-term structure and its dissolution in the face of modernization visible through a literary consciousness. In this respect, the study examines the historical and cultural dimensions of nomadic pastoralism through literary texts.
Çalışmada, Yaşar Kemal’in özellikle Çukurova’yı konu edinen romanlarında konargöçer kültürün edebî temsilleri analiz edilmiştir.
