Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the population dynamics of the smooth scallop (Flexopecten glaber) along the southern Black Sea coast of Türkiye, with a focus on its ecological role and aquaculture potential. Increasing reports from local stakeholders have highlighted the need to examine its spatial distribution, morphometric relationships, and population structure. Field sampling was conducted at 84 stations across three depth strata (5–35 m), yielding 1,009 specimens. Morphometric analyses revealed strong linear correlations among shell dimensions, and Length–Weight Relationship (LWR) analysis indicated a negative allometric growth pattern (W = 0.0004 SL²·⁶⁵⁸⁹). Growth modeling using the von Bertalanffy Growth Function produced parameters (H∞ = 118.82 mm, K = 0.09, t₀ = –0.67) consistent with slow-growing bivalves in temperate environments. Multivariate analyses (ANOSIM, SIMPER, MDS) demonstrated patchy yet structured distributions, with deeper strata supporting more stable populations. The detection of multiple size cohorts and elevated biomass in areas with low anthropogenic impact suggests favorable environmental conditions for recruitment and survival. Although historically present in the Black Sea, F. glaber has remained understudied, particularly regarding reproductive biology and habitat-specific responses. This study provides essential baseline data for future monitoring and management. Given its ecological plasticity, filter-feeding role, and market value, F. glaber emerges as a promising candidate for sustainable aquaculture. The findings further support the adoption of precautionary exploitation measures and targeted habitat protection to ensure the long-term viability of this ecologically valuable bivalve.
