Abstract
Sabahattin Ali is one of the leading short story writers of the Republican era. A social realist writer, Sabahattin Ali constructed his novels and stories within this framework. The poverty of Anatolian people and the problems they face are the main theme of his fictional works. In this context, poverty is explored in its various dimensions. In the stories examined, poverty is not addressed through the lens of political discourse and social chaos, but rather to raise awareness. The behavioral and intellectual dimensions of poverty have been set aside and reduced to an economic and subsistence plane in the stories. Although the author has a dissenting identity, in the stories examined, poverty forms the main framework of his works without transforming into class conflict. The characters have internalized absolute poverty. Appreciating a realistic style and observation, Sabahattin Ali particularly portrays the poverty and desperation of people living in villages and towns. The wars and crises of the late Ottoman Empire, the War of Independence, and the economic hardships experienced in the early years of the Republic left the people of Anatolia exhausted. During Sabahattin Ali's lifetime, Anatolian people faced two enemies: poverty and ignorance. The storyteller addresses these two enemies in detail in his works. While struggling with ignorance through a social realist perspective, his life is spent in exile and prison. Because combating and eradicating material poverty is a social phenomenon far beyond his capacity, he only features it extensively in his stories. In a sense, he combats poverty through his stories. This study will examine the dimensions of material poverty rather than "spiritual poverty," drawing on Sabahattin Ali's story collections, including Yeni Dünya (New World), Ses (Sound), Kağnı (Water Chapel), Değirmen (Mill) and Sırça Köşk (Glass Mansion). In this way, the degrees to which different social classes, men, women, and children of different ages are affected by absolute material poverty and deprivation, as well as their resistance or acceptance in the face of the harsh living conditions imposed by poverty, will be revealed.
