Abstract

This study explores the historical, pedagogical, and socio-cultural dimensions of etiquette education (adabımuaşeret) provided to children during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Employing a qualitative historical research design, the study analyzes primary and secondary sources through document and thematic analysis. Findings reveal that etiquette education was delivered not only through formal institutions such as schools and madrasas but also through broader social environments including family, mosques, neighborhoods, and palace schools. Instructional practices emphasized implicit learning, role modeling, task-based experience, and moral storytelling. Values such as respect, cleanliness, patience, courtesy, and social responsibility were central to both moral development and social integration. The results indicate a significant overlap between historical educational practices and contemporary values education, underscoring the potential of this heritage to enrich current educational policies. The study concludes that these multi-layered historical models of values transmission can offer culturally rooted insights for modern pedagogy.
