Abstract

In this book, Abdul Rahman Azzam centers his narrative on the life and experiences of the Portuguese adventurer and knight's squire, Fernão Lopes. Lopes, who initially joined Indian pirate-trade ships, ultimately converted to Islam, fought against his own people in India, was captured by the Portuguese, and was punished through the mutilation of his nose, ears, and left hand. Humiliated and captive, he escaped from a ship en route back to Portugal and sought refuge in the depths of Saint Helena Island. There, he spent the last 34 years of his life in isolation, transforming the island through animal husbandry and the cultivation of vegetables and fruits. Later, the island's transition to British rule would lead to its plundering, physical degradation, and transformation into an exile colony, losing its demographic and economic significance, especially with the shift of the Silk Road toward the Suez Canal. Through this biography, Azzam examines the Portuguese colonial route stretching along the East African coast and the Cape of Good Hope to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. He portrays the invasions, plunder, and the consequent impact on the lives of those along this exploration-trade-colonial pathway. It is also possible to trace the rising and declining importance of islands, ports, small states, the Reconquista, the ambition to reclaim Jerusalem, and the resentment and hostility directed at Muslims. In essence, the book offers insights into the history of Portuguese colonialism.
