Abstract

In Turkey, elitism has been possible, especially in the last two centuries and in almost every case, through a connection to the state. In modern times, the elites in almost every field are somehow connected to the state, primarily through two main institutions that determine the direction of society, politics and economics which have become relatively independent from other social institutions and whose influence has increased compared to other institutions. In this regard, in order to understand social stratification in Turkey, it is important to analyze the actors/types who hold sway in the state mechanism, the main institution where elites are positioned. We will define the type of social elite specific to this study as the state elite, describing them as the embodiment of the state, a profile that occupies high, important, and limited state positions. We will refer to the type that descends from the state elite or is related to the state elite by blood or marriage as the state nobility. Our main argument in this study is that the state nobility is close to the state elite in various social spheres, and that it easily achieves status due to the educational opportunities or social networks provided by this closeness. Education and relationships become a mechanism of reproduction, ensuring the continuity and effectiveness of the state nobility in various fields. The state nobility also has the function of connecting different focal points among the elite. For this reason, in studies of social structure in Turkey, we will attempt to draw attention to the role of the state noble within social types and groups, which we believe has been relatively neglected in relation to class and institutions. We will argue that structural analyses need to be deepened with an awareness of the state's decisive influence on social life, as well as the existence of elite types such as the state noble. As a preliminary study, this text will remain theoretical in nature and experimental in scope, attempting to address concepts from Bourdieu's vocabulary such as field, capital, habitus, and reproduction.
