Abstract
The Turkish Sufi tradition brings together two prominent mystics from different geographies-Ahmet Yesevî and Yunus Emre- within the same spiritual lineage. Yesevî, a stablisher of Turkish Sufism in Central Asia, guided the people of Turkestan in the 12th century telling them about Islam through his wisdom-filled teachings. Yunus Emre, a poet-dervish from 13th-14th centuries, expressed divine love in plain Turkish, touching hearts across Anatolia. The spiritual influence of Yesevî’s Hikmets, considered the starting point of Turkish Sufism, can be influenced in the poetry of Anatolian dervishs and many later Sufi poets. Foremost among Yesevî’s followers is Yunus Emre. Their poetry shares common ground in Sufi thought, the understanding of religious and mystical concepts, the portrayal of divine love and a simple, heartfelt expression. Many values found in Divan-ı Hikmet can be reinterpreted through Yunus Emre’s Divan. One shared theme is the journey of the human soul. Both figures treat the concept of sefer not merely as a physical voyage but as a symbol of the soul’s orientation toward the Divine. This study offers a comperative analysis of the layers of meaning sefer (journey) concept in the poems of Yesevî and Yunus Emre.
