Abstract

Aim: This study aims to determine occupational health and safety risk perceptions of health workers and their attitudes toward the perceived risks. Method: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 366 healthcare professionals in a university hospital. Data were collected online (Google Forms) via a questionnaire. The first part of the questionnaire is demographic and work-related characteristics of health workers, the second part is the perception of occupational health and safety risk, and the third part consists of questions measuring occupational health and safety risk attitudes. IBM SPSS v.23 package program was used to analyze the data. Results: 33.9% of the health workers perceived the unit’s risk level as high. 25.7% of the participants had a high perception of the risk of having an occupational accident, and 35.2% had a high perception of the risk of contracting an occupational disease. Infection (79.7%), stress (78.6%) and percutaneous injury (66.6%) are in the first three ranks among the risks perceived by healthcare professionals. It was found that the occupational health and safety risk attitudes were at a good level [43.87±5.11 (min-max: 11-55) score]. Conculion: Despite the differences in occupational health and safety risk perceptions in the working environment, it has been found that a significant portion of health workers are under physical, chemical, biological, ergonomics and psychosocial risks. For effective risk management, health professionals also need to take responsibility in addition to the institution’s managers.
