Abstract

Infections due to extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains have become a worldwide health issue. This study was carried out to detect the ESBL-producing E.coli and K. pneumoniae strains isolated from blood cultures of hospitalized patients, and to determine their antimicrobial susceptibilities. A total of 297 E.coli and 103 K.pneumoniae strains isolated from blood samples of hospitalized patients between January and December 2011 was included in the study. ESBL production and antibiotic resistance patterns of these strains was evaluated by automated system according to the standards of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). ESBL production was detected in 32 % of E.coli and 38 % of K.pneumoniae strains (p>0.05). The most effective antibiotics was imipenem and amikacin in all isolates. The resistance rates was significantly higher in ESBL positive strains than ESBL negative strains (p<0.00). The results of this study indicated that both ESBL production and increased rate of antimicrobial resistance are common in E.coli and K.pneumoniae strains. These results showed that ESBL detection should perform routinely in clinical laboratories and each hospitals should determine their antibiotic treatment policies according to their data.
