Abstract

This study examines the efficiency of transforming financial resources into operational outputs in mining firms listed on Borsa Istanbul (BIST) using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Due to its capital-intensive structure, high fixed cost components, and sensitivity to commodity price fluctuations, the mining sector requires efficient utilization of financial resources to ensure sustainable performance and competitiveness. The analysis covers five BIST-listed mining companies over the period 2014–2023. Total Assets, Cost of Sales, and Operating Expenses are employed as input variables, while Sales Revenue and Net Operating Profit/Loss are defined as output variables. An output-oriented DEA framework incorporating both CCR and BCC models is applied to evaluate firms’ ability to maximize revenue and operating profitability under their existing financial capacity. The findings reveal significant efficiency differences across firms and years; while some companies consistently operate on the efficiency frontier, others fall below the frontier in certain periods due to output shortfalls and scale inefficiencies. The results indicate that inefficiencies are primarily associated with insufficient revenue and operating profit generation rather than excessive input usage. By analyzing the relationship between financial structure and performance within a multi-input, multi-output framework in a capital-intensive sector, the study provides empirical evidence from an emerging market context and offers strategic implications for benchmarking practices and resource allocation decisions for managers and investors.
