Abstract

This study examines the causality relationships between annual total water consumption and climatic variables as well as demographic mobility in Istanbul for the period 2005–2023 within the Toda–Yamamoto approach. The data were obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Open Data Portal, and the Turkish State Meteorological Service, and logarithmic transformations were applied to the variables. The stationarity properties of the series were tested using the ADF and PP unit root tests, revealing that the variables are integrated at I(0) and I(1) levels, with the maximum order of integration determined as d_max=1. Based on information criteria, the optimal lag length was selected as k=2, and the stability of the VAR model was confirmed through the distribution of the inverse roots of the characteristic polynomial. The findings indicate significant causality from average temperature, humidity, and precipitation to water consumption, while in-migration also appears as a significant driving force affecting water demand. These results highlight the importance of considering both meteorological conditions and demographic projections in urban water supply management strategies.
