Abstract
Alanya Castle is one of Anatolia's most important archaeological sites due to its historical and touristic value. Excavations that have been ongoing at the castle for 40 years have documented the transformations the city underwent from the Hellenistic period to the Ottoman period. Excavations conducted in 2021-2022 in the Arasta within the castle uncovered numerous human and animal bones. These bones have been dated to a period spanning from the 18th century to the 20th century. This study presents the results of anthropological and zooarchaeological examinations on these bones. Anthropological analyses conducted on the remains of 87 individuals show that the demographic data of the Arasta people are consistent with the general picture of Anatolia during that period. In addition to demographic data, pathological conditions were also examined in the study, revealing the health problems experienced by people of that period. Variations and cultural traces observed in skulls also provide new insights into the people of the region. Zooarchaeological studies show that small livestock were the most commonly consumed animals in the local economy. A significant amount of pork was also consumed, which is important in terms of demonstrating the religious diversity of the population during that period. Furthermore, the presence of animals such as wild boar and deer also provides information about hunting activities. The Ottoman Period is represented by very few skeletal studies, both anthropological and zooarchaeological. Therefore, this study contributes to the literature by revealing new information not only about the region but also for Anatolia as a whole.
