Abstract

The existence of the art of cinema, which has continued from the Lumière brothers to the present day, has also brought about changes in art alongside the advancement of technology. Silent films composed of short sequences of images, responding to the great interest shown by society, developed further over time, necessitating stories, characters, and settings. In addition to the stories, characters, and settings created, cinema also offered society some clues about the future. With the emergence of science fiction films, designs of spaces, beings, creatures, captivating designs, devices, and robots that are not encountered in real life were brought to the screen and presented to the audience through the art of cinema. Although the devices that can be identified as the first robots shown in cinema were depicted as simple machines, talking machines with limited movement capabilities and restricted functions, over the years, these portrayals have evolved into depictions of robots indistinguishable from humans, thanks to artificial intelligence. The portrayal of robots, which were shown as beings that follow commands, unable to act beyond them and causing no harm to humanity, has evolved into representations of robots with their own consciousness, making their own decisions and actions, and bearing a human-like appearance. Especially in recent years, the theme of robot transformation has gained significant importance in the art of cinema. This theme can be explored in different directions, such as the transformation of humans into machines or machines becoming human. The representation of robots in cinema stands out as an element that sparks cultural, social, and philosophical debates through the medium of film.
