Abstract

The aim of this research is to measure individuals’ motivations and perceptions regarding digital detox by linking it to ecotourism. The study aims to reveal how digital detox can be transformed into an experience in ecotourism areas. A phenomenological design from qualitative research designs was used in the study, and data were collected using a semi-structured interview technique. In-depth interviews were conducted with 19 participants through snowball sampling, one of the types of purposive sampling, and the data were analysed using a thematic analysis approach. The analysis, conducted with five main themes and fourteen sub-themes, concluded that the vast majority of participants were aware of the concept of digital detox and that this awareness was driven by strong motivations such as psychological well-being, feeling the nature, distancing oneself from technology, and seeking seclusion. Digital detox has particularly positive effects on mental health. Its effects on physical health are more limited. Digital detox is disadvantageous in terms of communication breakdown, anxiety about missing out on current events, and financial risks in digitally dependent jobs. In the context of ecotourism areas, digital detox is an ideal activity for camping, trekking in nature, and mountain and highland activities. Its compatibility with sustainable tourism strategies and its ability to offer a multi-dimensional healing experience that could be among the important applications of the future constitute the strong side of digital detox.
