Abstract

This study aims to examine the perceptions of unionized education workers in Mersin, Türkiye regarding union policies and the relationship between unions and politics. Education unions not only advocate for professional and economic rights but also play a significant role in promoting democratic participation and defending social values. Framed within a phenomenological approach to capture the meanings participants attribute to their union experiences, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 33 education workers and analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The findings indicate that participants view unions’ relationships with political parties presenting both opportunities and risks. While political affiliation can provide advantages in advocacy for rights and policymaking, it can also weaken internal representation and limit pluralism. Participants emphasized that unions must develop principled and value-based political stances to secure social legitimacy and member trust and sense of belonging. Moreover, some members evaluate their union loyalty based on tangible achievements and grassroots impact rather than ideological alignment. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that unions are not only defenders of economic interests but also active actors in value-based policymaking, social awareness, and democratic participation. These findings suggest that union–politics nexus exerts a multidimensional influence that actively shape professional and political attitudes of education workers.
