Abstract

This study aims to compare the semantic equivalences in idioms using the concepts of "Auge" and "eye" in German and Turkish. The study was conducted using a qualitative research design with document analysis. The data analyzed were obtained from the books "Redewendungen und sprichwörtliche Redensarten" (Duden, 1992) and "Atasözleri ve Deyimler Sözlüğü" (Aksoy, 1988). Equivalence classifications were used in the data analysis; a total of 279 idioms (167 Turkish-German and 107 German-Turkish) were evaluated according to "complete" (Volläquivalenz), "partial" (Teiläquivalenz), and "zero equivalence" (Nulläquivalenz) criteria. The complete equivalence rate in Turkish idioms using the concept of "Auge" was 60%, while the complete equivalence rate in German idioms using the concept of "eye" was 50%. The zero equivalence rate of Turkish idioms (35%) is higher than that of German idioms (22%). The findings of the study show that the concept of "eye" is used much more frequently in Turkish idioms than in German; that idioms showing complete equivalence share a common physiological characteristic of the eye/Auge; that idioms showing partial equivalence use other organs or structures instead of the eye; and that in idioms showing zero equivalence, the absence of equivalents for religious and cultural structures increases the rate of incompatibility between the languages.
