Abstract

Objective: Diseases transmitting by blood and body fl uids are serious risks for patients and health workers. The aim of this study was to investigate the awareness and attitudes of dental students about infection control. Material and Method: This study was conducted with the participation of 468 dental students living in Turkey. An online questionnaire consists of 27 questions was applied to dental students after ethical permissions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods and Chi-square test. Signifi cance was evaluated at p <0.05 level. Findings and Results: 64.5% of dental students participating in the study were females, 35.5% were males, 71.4% had hepatitis B vaccines, 85.1% had no serological tests after vaccination. Furthermore, 53.4% of them had contact with infected blood and body fl uids during dental treatments in recent year, 97% have reported that they used gloves, 86.5% have used masks, 29.5% have used goggles. In addition, 82.7% of them have received anamnesis before treatment, 44.9% have reported that they could voluntarily treat patients who had HIV, Hepatit B virus and Hepatit C virus.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan diş hekimliği öğrencilerinden %64.5’i kız, %35.5’i erkek olup, %71.4’ü hepatit B aşısını eksiksiz yaptırdığını, %85.1’i aşı sonrası serolojik testleri yaptırmadıklarını, %53.4’ü enfekte kan ve vücut sıvılarıyla temas yaşadığını, dental tedaviler esnasında %97’sinin eldiven, %86.5’inin maske, %29.5’inin gözlük kullandığını, %82.7’sinin tedavi öncesi anamnez aldığını, %44.9’ unun enfekte bireyleri gönüllü olarak tedavi edebileceklerini bildirmişlerdir. Sonuç: Bu çalışmanın sonuçları, diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin enfeksiyon kontrolü konusundaki bilinç düzeylerinin artırılması ve davranış değiştirici eğitimlerin planlanması gerekliliğini ortaya koymaktadır.
