Abstract

Transferring a real space to a digital environment requires not only the reproduction of physical features but also the simulation of the space-specific atmosphere, emotional impacts, and perceptual intensities. Advanced game engines like Unreal Engine expand the representation possibilities of architectural spaces, allowing for the abstraction of the scenario and the reinterpretation of architectural components. This reproduction process integrates architectural elements such as lighting, materials, texture, and scale into the digital game scenario, creating a new "digital architectural experience." The design logic of digital game architecture relies on the integration of elements such as scenario, spatial depth, scale, material feel, and user movement with the game dynamics. Therefore, the extent to which an architectural experience can be sustained in a virtual environment is an important research question. Lighting, in particular, is a decisive component for both atmospheric generation and in-game navigation. When transferring a real space to a digital environment, the physical state, function, and character of the building must be analyzed, and natural and artificial lighting scenarios must be consistently integrated into an organizational framework across both the real and virtual layers. This study examines the process of transforming a real architectural structure into a digital game space from the perspectives of architecture and game design. The extent to which the formal characteristics, lighting scheme, spatial hierarchy, and user experience of the real space are preserved, transformed, or reinterpreted in the digital environment is discussed. Furthermore, the perceptual and functional effects of lighting in real and virtual spaces are compared, demonstrating how real spaces can be used not only as a visual reference but also as an experiential design input in digital game architecture. The study focuses on the TMMOB Edirne Representative Office building, currently used as an office. The building was documented through field observation, photography, literature review, and survey studies, and then modeled in 3D in Revit. This model was imported into Dialux Evo and Unreal Engine, and the lighting performance was analyzed comparatively, distinguishing between real and virtual. It evaluates how light and shadow relationships are simulated during the digitalization of the space and how this simulation influences user perception.
