Abstract

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates increasingly have been reported worldwide in the past 10 years. In this study; we aimed to investigate OXA-48 and KPC gene regions of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolatesSakarya University Hospital, Sakarya between January 2011 and July 2012. A total of 273 K.pneumoniae isolates were included in this study. Identification and antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed with conventional and Vitek 2 automated system. Two carbapenem-resistant isolates screened using three different primers set to detect 23S rRNA, OXA-48 and KPC gene region. Carbapenem resistant K.pneumoniae isolates, isolated in our laboratory, have been observed that they could cause different perceptions during conventional studies due to their properties of having small M-type colony morphology, having weak positivity of lactose and having late urea hydrolysis. By demonstrating the 23S rRNA gene region of K.pneumoniae isolates where defined by automated system; it was accepted that the identification has been confirmed as molecular basis. It was obser- ved that both isolates had OXA-48 gene region in relation to carbapenem resistance. KPC gene regions were not positive in our isolates. In conclusion; available data concerning carbapenem resistance among K.pneumoniae strains are limited but these agents are a matter of increasing clinical concern worldwide. Our results highlighted the need to monitor resistance level and mechanisms among K.pneumoniae isolates. at
