Abstract

Background and Aims: It is known that gastric diseases can lead to thyroid diseases by affecting iodine metabolism. It is also known that Helicobacter pylori infection can trigger autoimmune diseases. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the association between gastric endoscopic and histopathologic findings with the prevalence of patients with hypothyroidism or thyroid autoantibody positivity. Materials and Methods: Individuals with dyspeptic complaints, between the ages of 18-75, who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and gastric biopsy at the Ankara Keçiören Training and Research Hospital Gastroenterology Department between 1 January 2014-31 March 2014, were enrolled in the study. Thyroid stimulating hormone, free T3, free T4, anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody and antithyroglobulin antibody were measured from participants’ serum samples. Results: 154 patients were included in the study, 89% (n=137) were euthyroid, 11 % (n=17) hypothyroid. There were no significant differences in terms of prevalence of patients with hypothyroidism or thyroid auto-antibody positivity between individuals who were grouped depending on endo- scopic and histopathologic findings (p>0.05). Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between the gastric findings and the prev- alence of patients’ hypothyroidism or thyroid autoantibody. There is need for further studies to confirm these findings.
