Abstract

This study analyzes the concept of natural theology and its relationship to Islamic kalām through a structured approach that integrates definitional, historical, and methodological perspectives. It begins by outlining the meaning, origins, and major stages in the development of natural theology, emphasizing how its scope, function, and epistemic claims have evolved within philosophical and religious traditions. The study then examines the methodological features of natural theology, particularly its reliance on reason and reflection on the natural world to establish the existence of God and certain divine attributes, while also assessing its epistemic strengths and limitations. Building on this foundation, the study explores points of convergence and divergence between natural theology and kalām. It does so by analyzing representative models from Muʿtazilite, Ashʿarite, and Māturīdite schools, focusing on their respective methods of rational argumentation. This analysis evaluates whether certain developments within these schools can be understood as partial engagements with natural-theological reasoning. The study concludes that although kalām can selectively appropriate some elements of natural theology, it does not fully integrate them into its system. Rather, it preserves its distinct epistemological framework by employing rational tools in an instrumental and controlled manner, remaining fundamentally grounded in the authority of revelation.
