Abstract

Phenol, an aromatic compound formed by the attachment of one or more OH- molecules to the benzene ring, is a white-pink or colourless solid crystalline substance. Phenol, which has flammable properties, evaporates very slowly compared to water. Phenol, also known as hydroxy or hydroxyl benzene or carbolic acid, is a compound with good solubility in aqueous media. Phenol, is a widely used organic pollutant and is often used as a disinfectant in aquaculture. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different concentrations of phenol on some hematological parameters in scaly carp (Cyprinus carpio). Three different concentrations of phenol (0.01, 0.1 and 1 ppm) were applied to the fish for 96 hours. At the end of the study, hematological values [erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit level and erythrocyte indices: [mean erythrocyte volume (MCV); mean erythrocyte hemoglobin (MCH); mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)] were measured. The erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit level of the phenol-treated groups decreased compared to the control group. A decrease in the erythrocyte indices and thus anemia was observed in the phenol-treated groups.
