Abstract

This descriptive study examined family satisfaction in the general intensive care units of İzmir City Hospital using the FS-ICU-24R scale. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with relatives of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit for at least 48 hours. A total of 130 family members participated. Family satisfaction was evaluated in two subdimensions: satisfaction with care and satisfaction with the decision-making process. The aim was to measure intensive care satisfaction among relatives of patients treated in the general intensive care unit, determine the main factors affecting satisfaction, and develop recommendations to enhance family satisfaction. The mean total satisfaction score was 77.6±9.0. The mean score for satisfaction with care was 79.8±9.3, while the mean score for satisfaction with the decision-making process was 72.8±13.3. These findings indicate that families were more satisfied with direct clinical care than with decision-making processes. In the care domain, the highest mean scores were observed for evaluation and treatment of respiratory distress (83.2±15.2), attention and care provided by healthcare staff (81.8±14.6), and pain management (80.2±16.4). The general physical environment of the ICU received a mean score of 74.0±18.9, whereas the waiting room had the lowest mean score (59.8±24.5). Participation in daily visits (70.0±24.2) and involvement in patient care (70.6±23.8) were rated at a moderate level. In the decision-making domain, honesty of information (79.0±16.3) and frequency of communication with physicians (76.8±17.5) received higher scores, whereas perceived control over care decisions (67.0±23.5) and perceived support during decision-making (69.4±22.8) were lower. Demographic variables had no significant effect on satisfaction scores. These findings suggest that technical aspects of care are positively perceived; however, improvements are needed in physical conditions and family involvement in decision-making. Strengthening communication and promoting family-centered care practices are essential to enhance overall satisfaction.
