Abstract

Objective: There are reports in the literature that flavanols and catechins in the tea plant help prevent oral diseases such as dental caries, gingival inflammation, periodontitis, halitosis and mouth malignancy. The aim of this study is to examine tea frequency of Rize that is highest tea production in Turkey and effects of tea consumption on the oral health in adults. Material and Methods: Individuals aged 18-62 years participated in the study. The plaque index was evaluated using Silness and Löe’s scale.A questionnaire including systemic health, oral health habits, dental visit and diet was administered to assess the effect of caries risk factors. On clinical and radiological examination, the number of caries(D), missing(M), and filled(F) teeth were collected and individual DMFT values were obtained. Statistically significant difference was defined as a p value of <0.05. Results: Approximately 32% of the 220 individuals participating in the study were young adults (15-24 years), 52% middle age adults (25-44 years), and 16% older adults (45-64 years. Individuals of 69.1% (n = 152) were females and 30.9% (n = 68) were males. Body mass index was found to be statistically significantly higher in the group with no drinking tea. The incidence of black tea consumption was found to be statistically low among individuals who had low frequency of drinking coffee. Black tea consumption showed a positive relationship with body mass index, and smoking and, a hegative relationship with plaque index and DMFT. Conclusion: In our study, it was emphasized that black tea consumption was related to past caries experience, plaque index, body mass index and smoking, and it could be a protective effect on oral and dental health by antioxidant and antibacterial compounds in black tea content.
