Abstract

This study examined science teachers' informal reasoning regarding biotechnological applications. The study was conducted using phenomenology design. The study group was formed using an easily accessible sampling. The study included six science teachers who volunteered to participate and were knowledgeable about biotechnological applications. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Science teachers' informal reasoning was classified into rational, emotional, and intuitive reasoning types. The factors influencing participants' reasoning regarding biotechnological applications were analyzed using the sociology/culture (S), environment (E), economy (E), science (S), technology (T), ethics/morality (E) and policy (P) dimensions (SEE-STEP model). Research findings indicate that science teachers mostly use rational reasoning regarding biotechnological applications. This suggests that the teachers adopt a scientific and analytical approach. However, emotional and intuitive reasoning were also found to be effective in certain situations, particularly in matters that referenced ethical and social values. This demonstrates that teachers balance scientific knowledge with ethical and social responsibilities. The use of emotional reasoning demonstrates that teachers demonstrate sensitivity to ethical values and individuals' emotional needs, independent of scientific data. Participants generally mentioned intuitive reasoning in matters where they could not directly access scientific data and used this method only as a complementary tool. This suggests that science teachers make decisions based largely on scientific foundations and use intuitive evaluations to a limited extent. However, intuitive reasoning should not be completely excluded, reflecting individuals' efforts to cope with uncertainties beyond scientific knowledge. The study determined that sociology/culture, environment, science, technology, ethics/moral and policy factors influenced participants' reasoning about biotechnological applications. In particular, sociology/culture, technological, scientific, environmental, and ethical/moral factors played a decisive role in teachers' decision-making processes. Based on the research findings, studies investigating students' perceptions of biotechnology and the relationship between these perceptions and teachers' attitudes could be conducted.
