Abstract

Tuberculosis is still an important health problem in low-income countries. The incidence of the disease has been increasing in recent years. Tuberculous peritonitis is a rare form of tuberculosis, which can present with fever, weight loss, abdominal pain and distention. CA-125 is a non-specific marker of ovarian cancer, which can be found higher than normal in patients with tuberculous peritonitis and decreases with the appropriate treatment. Misdiagnosis is an issue due to symptoms mimic- king ovarian cancer or cirrhosis. Caseating necrosis is the major pathological finding in tuberculosis, but some cases may present with non-caseating granulomas. Here we present two young patients with tuberculous peritonitis, which demonstra- te the difficulty of diagnosis, follow-up and complications despite appropriate therapy.
