Abstract

Collocations play an important role in language teaching and language acquisition. These word combinations consist of words that frequently occur together and within a specific context in a text. The words that form a collocation generally cannot be replaced or substituted by others. Since mastering collocations significantly contributes to the development of linguistic competence, foreign language learners, in particular, should learn these word combinations as units. Against this background, the aim of the present study is to examine the textbook Motive, used in the German preparatory program at X-University, with regard to collocations. First, the concept of collocation was analyzed based on the relevant literature, and its scope was defined. Then, the textbook—which is a compact coursebook starting from level B1—was examined to determine how frequently and in what way collocations of the type (noun + verb) appear in the reading texts as well as in the corresponding exercises. A qualitative-quantitative research design was chosen for the study, applying a case study design. The data were collected through document analysis and evaluated using descriptive analysis. The results were visualized in tabular form. As part of the quantitative data analysis, the frequency of collocations and their proportion per reading text were calculated. The results show that the collocations found in the reading texts are limited and are almost not considered at all in the corresponding exercises. While some texts contain three to four collocations, others include only one or two. This indicates that collocations in the textbook are not used systematically but rather sporadically. Therefore, the use of collocations should be given greater consideration in language textbooks.
