Abstract

This study aims to examine the suitability and linguistic types of collocations in the Schritte International Neu B1.1 textbook for Turkish-speaking learners. A total of 511 collocations were identified and categorized based on their equivalence to Turkish as “Appropriate” (54.0%), “Partially Appropriate” (35.8%), and “Inappropriate” (10.2%). The findings reveal that collocations in units themed around daily life and health show a high level of compatibility with Turkish (61.2–69.5%), while those in units related to work, education, and housing exhibit increased rates of partial compatibility and incompatibility (12–14.3%). Regarding collocation types, “noun + verb” structures (48.34%) are predominant, whereas prepositional verbs and multi-word structures pose additional challenges for learners. Fixed expressions and idioms, although less frequent, are significant for fluency in communication. This highlights the need to consider both linguistic structures and cultural contexts when teaching collocations to Turkish-speaking learners. The study underscores the importance of tailored exercises based on collocation types, cultural context explanations, and an emphasis on fixed expressions in teaching materials. The findings indicate that adapting and supporting instructional materials is essential for enabling Turkish-speaking learners to use German accurately and naturally. These insights form the framework for understanding the linguistic and cultural dynamics encountered by Turkish-speaking learners in their German language learning process.
