Abstract

Since 2022, Algeria has been reshaping its educational language policy through the strengthening of English and the redefinition of the place of French, a language historically present in scientific education, administration and social practices. Although this shift is often discussed at political and institutional levels, its effects on learners’ representations remain less explored. This study examines the representations and motivations of 78 Bachelor’s students at Larbi Ben M’Hidi University of Oum El Bouaghi towards English and French. The analytical framework combines language representations (Castellotti & Moore, 2002; Moore, 2001) and theories of L2 motivation, particularly Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System (2009). The findings show that English dominates representations related to modernity, international openness and employability, whereas French retains perceived usefulness for current studies and identity anchoring. The shift therefore appears less as a substitution than as a reconfiguration of Algerian students’ plurilingual repertoire.
