Abstract

Measles is an important, vaccine-preventable and highly contagious viral disease. Measles shows more severe complications in adults who may need hospitalisation. In this study it is aimed to obtain epidemological, clinical, and laboratory data from adult patients with measles.A total of 19 adult patients diagnosed with measles between 5th March to 23rd May 2013 were investigated retrospectively. A form which included demographical, clinical and laboratory values were created for each patient. SPSS 22.0 software package was used for analysis. Continuous variables, mean, standard deviation, categorical variables were shown as case numbers and percentages.Of the patients, 16 (84.2 %) were female and three (15.7 %) were male. There was history of contact with measles patients for five patients. The most common symptoms in patients were high fever, cough and rash and most frequent physical examination findings were Koplik spots and maculopapuler rash. Laboratory findings were as follows: leukopenia in 13 (68.4 %), thrombocytopenia in three (15.7 %), high aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels in 11 (57.7 %), high alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in 10 patients. Eighteen of patients did not know the history of their measles vaccination and one remarked he had no measles vaccine. All of the patients were hospitalised for observation. Among these patients, two cases of pneumonia, six cases of diarrhea and a case of both diarrhea and pneumonia complications were seen. When the ratio of susceptible people exceed a level in a population, a measles epidemic is unavoidable. Because measles is highly contagious, high vaccination rates should be obtained for prevention. Early diagnosis of patients and precautions in order to isolate patients might help to slow down spreading of the disease.
