Abstract
This study examines and evaluates the educational activities of American missionaries in the Ottoman Empire in İzmir. The missionaries affiliated with the American Board, the most powerful missionary organization of the United States, were active not only in education but also in religious and cultural fields, leaving a profound impact on the region. This influence played a decisive role, particularly in the rise of Armenian nationalism and in initiatives aimed at establishing an independent Armenian state. The main focus of the article is the foundation and development of the İzmir Station and the educational institutions established within it. In addition, the study addresses the evolution and transformation of the kindergarten, the girls’ college, and the boys’ college in İzmir from the Ottoman period into the Republican era. Within this transformation, the administrative and social changes brought about by the collapse of the Empire and the establishment of a nation-state—where individual rights and freedoms were constitutionally guaranteed—are analyzed in relation to the changes experienced by the colleges. The adoption of secular and national education policies by the new Republic increased state supervision over these institutions and significantly affected their activities.
