Abstract

Objective: Aim of this research is to identify the experiences and expectations of academician women during gynecological examination. Methods: The universe of this descriptive and cross-sectional study consisted of female academics working in a university, and the sample consisted of those from three faculties of the university who agreed to participate in the research (n=133). The data of the study were collected using a questionnaire forms prepared by the researchers in accordance with related literature in 2018 between October 15- December 15. Numbers, percentages, arithmetic means and standard deviations were used in the evaluation of the data. Results: Age average of the academicians which compose the research group is 36.95±8.56 and %55.7 of them are lecturers. On average, it is found that these academicians experienced their first gynecological examination when they are 25 years old, from this group %53.4 of them have given birth and %22.6 are having regular gynecological examinations. When their gynecological examination experiences are analysed, it is found out that they are disturbed; by the position on examination table (%64.7), not having a private area before and after the examination (%41.4) and the lack of respect for privacy (%39.8). The highest expectations of the women who are to have a gynecological examination are; doors being shut (%81.2) and the reassuring attitude from personnel. Conclusion: It is found out that most of the academician women do not go for a gynecological examination regularly, also they are disturbed by their position and they care about their privacy at most during the examination.
