Abstract
Gender inequality is considered one of the main obstacles to economic and social development, particularly in developing countries. Limited female labor force participation affects the sustainability of economic growth, resource allocation, and income distribution. Therefore, identifying its determinants is crucial for both the academic literature and policymakers. This study empirically analyzes the macroeconomic determinants of gender inequality in Türkiye over the period 1993–2023. The dependent variable is a gender inequality indicator, while the independent variables include economic development, unemployment, fertility, urbanization, and digitalization. In the empirical analysis, the Johansen cointegration test is employed to examine the existence of a long-run relationship among the variables, and the results indicate that the series are cointegrated. The long-run coefficients are estimated using the DOLS, FMOLS, and CCR methods. The findings show that economic development, unemployment, and fertility rates increase gender inequality, whereas urbanization reduces it. In addition, internet usage, used as an indicator of digitalization, is found to increase gender inequality. These results indicate that economic growth alone is not sufficient to achieve gender equality and that structural factors play a decisive role.
