Abstract

This study delves into the domestication and foreignization strategies utilized by AI-powered large language models (LLMs) in Korean–Turkish literary translation. It compares the outputs of ChatGPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 4, and Grok 3 with human translations. The dataset comprises eight excerpts from Korean author Lee Ki-ho’s story “Where is Choi Mi-jin?” (“최미진은 어디에?” [Choimijin-ın odie]), contrasted with a human translation prepared by twenty senior students from Erciyes University’s Korean Language and Literature Department and published in Varlık Journal. Grounded in Venuti’s (1995) theoretical framework, the analysis presents each LLM’s tendencies in tabular form. Findings indicate significant variations in strategic choices: models occasionally preserve source cultural elements while at other times adapt meanings to target norms. Relative to human translations, LLMs exhibit inconsistency, particularly in culturally bound expressions. Nonetheless, their ability to generate fluent and natural Turkish in select texts highlights potential for literary translation enhancement. The research discusses limitations and opportunities of AI-based technologies in literature, providing a foundation for future inquiries, including hybrid human-AI models.
