Abstract
Dubbing is a popular method of translating audiovisual products into the target language by replacing voices. Turkey and Iran, as two dubbing countries, are active in the field of producing dubbed content for all age ranges and in different film genres. One of the main areas is dubbing animated films and cartoons for children. Shrek is a popular humorous film that was dubbed into many languages as well as Turkish and Persian. This American animated film challenges the logocentric assumptions of fairy tales and subverts the traditional representation of beautiful as benevolent, therefore breaking the standard of most animations. The translation of such popular films requires linguistic and cultural expertise to convey humor and emotions accurately to the audience. In addition to cultural factors, which can deeply influence the translation process, some figurative language, such as idioms, challenges translators as they are difficult to recognize and render in the target language. The present article will focus on the translation of idiomatic structures in Shrek I and II, with a focus on Baker's strategy of translating idioms and an analysis of the cultural and linguistic factors that distinguish the dubbed versions from the source one and each other. What is observed is the change in the translation of cultural elements, namely food restrictions such as alcoholic drinks, use of language etiquettes such as swearing, and sexual content for children in both target languages. Upon comparing the Persian and Turkish versions, it is found that the Turkish-dubbed rendition is more faithful to the original culture, whereas the Persian version exhibits a higher degree of cultural adaptation, as the translator employed domestication techniques to align the animation with Iranian culture.
