Abstract
This study examines the death rituals of celebrities in Turkey and their reflections on society within the framework of Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and cultural capital. The phenomenon of death is considered as a social reality shaped by the individual's lifestyle, social status and cultural background. The study emphasizes that the funeral ceremonies of artists, celebrities and prominent figures of society, defined as socialites, are a reflection of the social roles and cultural capital they have assumed throughout their lives. In this context, beyond an individual loss, funeral ceremonies stand out as a symbolic ritual in the eyes of society. While habitus is shaped by individuals' social positions and life practices, funeral ceremonies are considered as a concrete reflection of this habitus. The social and cultural capital acquired by celebrities during their lifetime is clearly manifested in post-mortem rituals. This is especially the case when artists are sent off to their last journeys in symbolic places such as Teşvikiye Mosque and their tombstones reflect their personal lifestyles and artistic identities. The role of the media in conveying these rituals to society is an important focus of the study. While funeral ceremonies are considered as a critical tool in the construction of social memory, the media dramatizes these processes and transforms them into a collective ritual. In this context, funeral ceremonies are considered as social events in which social values are reproduced and made visible, beyond being an individual loss. As a result, the reflection of social and cultural dynamics in the individual's life on post-mortem rituals is examined in a wide perspective from tombstone designs to the selection of funeral spaces. The study makes an important contribution to this field by analyzing how death rituals are reproduced in the context of social structure and cultural capital within the framework of Bourdieu's concepts of field, habitus and cultural capital.
