Abstract
Libya is a North African country with a coastline of 1,770 km in the Mediterranean. The political instability that began after the Arab Spring in 2011 has disrupted the updating of marine sciences and bathymetric maps. Satellite-based bathymetry offers an effective method for shallow water bathymetry that can obtain depth data quickly and cost-effectively over large areas, as an alternative to lidar, UAV, or acoustic methods. In this study, bathymetry estimation was carried out using Sentinel-2 satellite images to strengthen intergovernmental relations between Türkiye and Libya and contribute to Al Khoms Port's navigational safety. The analysis conducted with Sentinel-2 data yielded R²: 0.86 and RMSE: 0.99 meters for Al Khoms Port without applying tidal correction. These findings show that satellite-based bathymetry can provide preliminary information for navigational safety in regions lacking bathymetric data and can be used in applications such as coastal management and environmental monitoring. However, it was assessed that tidal corrections and modelling of environmental factors were required for full compliance with IHO S-44 standards.
