Abstract

In this study, the tensile properties of PLA, PETG, and ABS filaments produced using the FDM method were investigated, specifically investigating the effects of different infill geometries (rectilinear, triangular, and honeycomb) and print orientations (horizontal and vertical) on mechanical behavior. Tensile tests conducted on samples conforming to the ASTM D638 standard showed that the best performance for each filament occurred with different patterns and orientations. In PLA, the horizontally printed grid pattern yielded the most successful results in terms of both strength and ductility. In PETG, the triangular pattern provided the highest tensile strength at 29.99 MPa, while the vertically printed grid pattern exhibited the highest elongation (6.90%). In ABS, the honeycomb pattern stood out in strength at 30.21 MPa, while the horizontally printed grid pattern exhibited a more balanced performance by increasing ductility. In general comparisons, PLA was more ductile, ABS was more durable, and PETG exhibited a balance between these two properties. The results clearly demonstrate that material selection, infill geometry, and print orientation should be considered in producing functional FDM parts.
