Abstract

This study outlines the current state and emerging trends in Business Process Management (BPM) and Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) research in the digital era. Originating with Smith, Taylor, Drucker, and Deming, BPM evolved from 1990s process reengineering to continuous improvement and ERP integration, and since the 2000s to a paradigm combining process modeling, automation, and refinement under digital transformation. The study examined 909 Scopus-indexed articles (2004–2025) via systematic review and bibliometric analysis of keyword frequency, thematic evolution, co-authorship networks, citation dynamics, and international collaboration. Findings reveal that technologies such as process mining, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things represent strategically significant research themes. “Business process management,” “process mining,” and “BPMN” emerged as the most frequent keywords. Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific dominate the geographic distribution. At the same time, citation network analysis highlights Marlon Dumas, Marcello La Rosa, Jan Mendling, and Wil van der Aalst as leading scholars. By providing a systematic perspective on BPM/BPMN’s historical development, current trajectories, and future research directions, this study offers methodological guidance for multidisciplinary investigations into digital transformation, process optimization, and innovation management.
