Abstract

This study evaluates the financial performance of the residential care activities sector in Türkiye from 2009 to 2023. Serving the elderly, disabled, and individuals in need of care, the sector is operated by both public and private institutions. Financial performance is assessed through liquidity, capital structure, turnover, and profitability ratios, with the CRITIC and MAIRCA methods employed for performance evaluation. Findings indicate that while the sector maintains adequate liquidity, it heavily relies on short-term debt. Asset utilisation has improved over time, yet profitability ratios have shown volatility. A pronounced decline in performance occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic (2021), whereas 2023 marked the peak in performance. Among sub-sectors, Residential Care Activities for Mental Retardation, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse demonstrated the highest performance, while services for the elderly and disabled showed the lowest. The study aims to support policymakers in enhancing the financial sustainability of the sector, thereby ensuring continued care for vulnerable populations.
