Abstract

Advancements that have historically transformed and broadened the concept of leadership have significantly shaped its approach and accelerated research in healthcare. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current literature on leadership in health services. It explores the scope, key trends, and interrelationships of the topic using bibliometric methods. The data of this study were collected from the Web of Science (WOS) database using predetermined keywords, and analyses were conducted with Vosviewer and Bibliometrix. A total of 705 research articles published in English from 2019 to 2024 in SCI expanded and SSCI indexed journals. The findings show that 2024 had the highest number of publications. Most studies focused on nursing, with the Journal of Nursing Management being the most popular publication outlet. The United States contributed the most to the field, although international collaboration remained limited. These findings are meant to guide future research and influence the direction of healthcare studies, promoting ongoing progress in the field. The analysis revealed that the most cited study on healthcare leadership was published in 2020 in the journal of Nursing management, and its lead author, Leodoro J. Labrague was identified as the most productive and influential researcher in the field. In recent years, research on healthcare leadership has mainly centered on nursing and transformational leadership themes. Furthermore, there is a growing interest in studies using a multi-paradigm approach to explore different leadership styles and areas. This study systematically highlights recent trends in healthcare leadership research and aims to inform future study designs and trend analysis in the field.
