Abstract

This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between presenteeism and work motivation among nurses working in medical and surgical clinics. The study was conducted in a public hospital located in the Aegean region and included 202 nurses. The independent variable of the study was presenteeism level, the main dependent variable was work motivation level, and other variables consisted of sociodemographic characteristics. Data were collected using a sociodemographic information form, the Stanford Presenteeism Scale, and the Nurse Work Motivation Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 27 statistical software. The mean presenteeism score was 16.75±3.62, and the mean work motivation score was 56.60±7.52. A negative, moderate, and statistically significant relationship was found between presenteeism and work motivation (r=-0.415; p<0.001). Regression analysis showed that presenteeism was a significant predictor of work motivation and explained 17.3% of the total variance. As presenteeism increased, work motivation decreased. The findings indicate that presenteeism is an important indicator in terms of nurses’ work experience, institutional performance, and employee health. It is recommended that healthcare institutions develop organizational strategies that support employee well-being and reduce presenteeism.
