Abstract

Children’s playgrounds are essential components of urban environments, contributing significantly to children’s physical, social, and emotional development. Well-designed playgrounds encourage exploration, enhance imagination and motor skills, support problem-solving, stress management, and social interaction, and promote healthy lifestyle habits through physical activity. Thus, playgrounds hold an important place in urban landscape planning and design. Despite their significance, many current playgrounds face challenges such as limited activity diversity, lack of age-appropriate designs, inadequate accessibility for children with disabilities, insufficient consideration of environmental factors, and poor maintenance. This study evaluates the spatial adequacy of children's playgrounds in Ganita Coastal Park, located in the city center of Trabzon. The evaluation is based on established design and planning criteria. Surveys conducted with parents identified user tendencies, satisfaction levels, and existing deficiencies. Playgrounds were assessed using a 1-to-5 rating system across criteria including suitability for different age groups, area size, accessibility, environmental quality, safety, equipment diversity, material use, maintenance, and landscape elements. Based on these scores, adequacy levels were classified, and targeted recommendations were developed to improve playground quality and user experience.
